New Zealand’s Holden team in the Australian V8 Supercar series is quietly confident heading into this weekend’s second round of the 2007 series.
March 21, 2007, 10.45am. New Zealand driver Jason Richards says he believes a podium finish is a distinct possibility for his Tasman Motorsport team at this weekend’s BigPond 400 at Barbagallo Raceway in Perth, Western Australia.
Richards said the Tasman Motorsport Holden Commodores were on the pace in the opening 2007 Australian V8 Supercar round showing in Adelaide earlier this month and that form should continue in Perth.
Richards qualified his #3 VE Commodore fifth and ran as high as fifth during Race 2 before finishing 13th.
"My car hadn't turned a wheel before the first practice session, but it was a fast car straight out of the transporter, and for much of the weekend," Richards said.
"We didn't realise our full potential in Adelaide, but I think we can this weekend.
"Barbagallo is a short track - under 2.5km - and the lap times are quick - in the 55-56 second range - and that makes qualifying extremely important.
"Traditionally we’ve raced reasonably well at Perth although over the past couple of years we haven't qualified as well as we would have liked. We've been stuck down in 18th or 20th.
"If we can tidy that up a little then I think a podium finish is not out of the question."
Richards' teammate, Greg Murphy, has been on the podium four times in the Perth round.
"Perth's pretty simple,” he said. “It all comes down to how good the car is, how well you qualify and not making any mistakes.”
