Reid enjoys competitive outing at Autopolis

New Zealand racing driver Jonny Reid enjoyed a competitive outing at the sixth round of the 2006 All-Japan Formula 3 at the Autopolis circuit over the weekend, finishing fifth in both races.

Untitled Document In the first he moved up from his qualifying position of seventh to fifth at the flag, and in the second he started and finished fifth.

The 23-year-old was a race winner at his first attempt at the world-ranked All-Japan Formula 3 series last year but cut short his season there to join New Zealand's A1GP team.

On his return this year he has twice finished second in a race but at the three rounds prior to the Autopolis one he has not had the car set-up to match the speed of this year's championship points leader Adrian Sutil, or the best of the Japanese drivers, Koudai Tsukakoshi.

This weekend however, Reid and his INGING teammate Roberto Streit were right on the money, with Streit finishing second in the first race then winning the second.

In the first race, held in hot, dry conditions on Saturday, Kazuya Oshima set the fastest lap time in both qualifying sessions and won the race very much as he liked from Streit and Takuya Izawa.

Reid stormed through from seventh place to fifth at the start and spent the race shadowing Brazilian Fabio Carbone while successfully defending his position from championship points leader Adrian Sutil.

In the second race, held on Sunday, pole sitter Oshima did not get away well, allowing fellow front row starter Streit to lead from start to finish. Oshima held on for second place with Sutil third, Koudai Tsukakoshi fourth, Reid fifth and Finn Marko Asmer sixth.

There is now a short break until the seventh round of the 2006 All-Japan Formula 3 Champion at Sugo over the August 26/27 weekend.
