Michael Pickens needs a podium finish to clinch Western Springs’ National Midget Car Series.
March 1, 2007, 3pm. Only the Midget Car category of the season-long Western Springs Speedway National Series remains undecided heading into this weekend’s final meeting of the season. Newly crowned New Zealand champion Michael Pickens leads with 109 points, 16 ahead of Bryce Townsend on 93.
A win in Saturday night’s feature race is worth 26 points, second place 21 and third 17 so any podium finish will assure Pickens of the title win.
Townsend is the only potential challenger as third placed Brad Mosen has 90 points and Shayne Alach and Graham Standring are tied on 85.
Allan Wakeling secured the Sprint Car series win earlier this month. Wakeling leads with 136 points but the minor placings remain alive with Kerry Jones on 107 points, Greg Pickerill 96 and Dean Brindle 95.
Teenaged Hayden Williams has dominated the TQ Midget series this summer finishing on the podium at all six races so far and scoring two wins. Williams has 128 points and leads Zahn Turner on 88 and Ross Linklater with 68.
