Oz test for rising Kiwi star

Damon Leitch lands test with top Australian Formula Ford team.

Invercargill teenager Damon Leitch (16) takes another step up the motorsport ladder when he tests a works Formula Ford in Australia next month.

Team G Force Mygale Team boss, Greg Woodrow, approached Formula Ford racer Damon and his father Barry at Manfeild and offered a free test.

"He said he’d been watching Damon's driving and thought he was fast and consistent and that he doesn't make mistakes," says Barry.

"It's pretty exciting. They're one of Australia's top teams. Greg Woodrow has been associated with some of Australia's best current V8 Supercar drivers in the early stages of their careers."

Damon will test the Mygale at Winton, north of Melbourne, on April 17. He says the French-designed and built Mygale is “a very late model car compared with the Zero Fees Stealth I drove in the New Zealand Championship.

“It also has a Duratec engine, an 1800cc engine compared with the older 1600cc motor used (in New Zealand). The Mygale was the car to beat in this year's New Zealand title chase, Richie Stanaway in particular using his to win the series.”

Damon is getting his hands on a PlayStation game that features Winton so he can learn something about the track before the test.

Leitch has just concluded his second year in the MTA NZ Formula Ford Championship. In his first he finished 10th overall in an elderly Class 2 Van Diemen. He drove the Stealth to fifth this season, winning two of the final three rounds.
