Newsflash: Gronholm fights back


September 2, 2007, 12.30pm. Ford’s Marcus Gronholm has sliced six-tenths of a second off Sebastien Loeb’s lead in Rally of New Zealand after winning the first afternoon stage near Raglan.

The Finn completed the Maungatawhiri test at an average of 120.50km/h to shave the Citroen driver’s lead to 2.3 seconds.

Meanwhile, Australian Chris Atkinson is on the charge in the works Subaru, and has closed to four seconds behind fourth-placed Finn Jari-Matti Latvala (Ford Focus RS).

Atkinson started the day 11.4 seconds behind the Ford and has whittled his margin during today’s first four stages.
