Pickens leads field for title defence

Michael Pickens will defend his New Zealand Midget Car title at Auckland’s Western Springs on Saturday night.

The field for the 2008 New Zealand title has just a sole Stratford entry joining the Western Springs regulars to make an expected field of 28 cars.

A time trial, heat race, dash, B-main and 30-lap final is the format that will decide the national championship.

Joining Pickens among the favourites is teenager Brad Mosen, who showed stunning pace during the international races in early February; and four former champions – Michael Kendall, Graham Standring, Tony Fabish and Carl Worboys – are among the title chasers.

The likes of Shayne Alach, Lance Beale, Bryce Townsend, Shaun Insley and Scott Buckley rate highest among the contenders for a first-time victory in the title that was first raced in the 1939-1940 season.
