Former champion set to burn up the Waikato tarmac.
June 4, 2007, 9am. Former New Zealand rally champion Joe McAndrew will start this month’s Hamilton Car Club promoted, 2007 Genuine Vehicle Imports (GVI) Rally of Waitomo in his potent Nissan Skyline GTR.
McAndrew and the Nissan Supercar will be a potent force in the tarmac rally run on roads in the King Country.
McAndrew has specialised in long distance and marathon events in recent years, winning both the 2002 Midnight Sun to Red Sea Rally and the London to Sydney Marathon in 2004.
Last year he was leading the Carrera Sudamericana Marathon in South America when his Honda Integra R was involved in a head-on crash with a wayward local near the end of the event, wrecking the car and putting both McAndrew and co-driver Sue O’Neil in hospital.
McAndrew returned to NZ, and three weeks later comprehensively won the Dunlop Targa Rotorua tarmac event driving the Nissan GTR. Then in October he placed third overall driving the repaired Honda, on the South Island all gravel marathon, NZ Silver Fern Rally.
McAndrew says the all-tarmac Waitomo event, which is based around Te Kuiti, will be the first one-day event he has contested for several years.
