Mason stops in SS5

July 7, 2007, 2.30pm. New Zealand rally champion Richard Mason has stopped in Special Stage 5 of the Taranaki Tarmac Rally.

Mason (Subaru Impreza WRX STi) had been running third, behind rally leader Glen Inkster (Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 6.5) and Neill Marshall (Evo 3).

The cause of his car stopping is unclear, though he dropped more than a minute to Inkster on the previous test and slipped from second to third place.

Inkster continues to dominate the rally, winning SS5 and extending his lead over Marshall to 68 seconds.

Daynom Templeman (Evo 6) is now third, ahead of Charlie Evans (Mazda RX7).

Tom Good is fifth in his Saker Sprint sports car, followed by Glenn Rosser (WRX).

Top seed Glenn Smith’s fightback continues and he now has the Impreza in eighth place.
