Mason loses time with puncture

A punctured tyre has cost Richard Mason dearly and catapulted Dean Sumner into the position of first NewZealand driver in Rally NZ.

August 31, 2007, 5.30pm. A flat tyre part-way through the long Waitomo 2 special stage has dropped Richard Mason out of the lead in the New Zealand championship section of Rally NZ this afternoon.

The BNT Subaru Impreza driver and co-driver Sara Randall had to stop and change the wheel, dropping several minutes.

That dropped him out of `13th place overall and second in the production world championship class, and out of the NZ section lead which has now been taken by Scotsman Alister McRae (Lancer Evo) who is having his second start in the NZ series. He contested the opening round in Otago.

Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9 driver Dean Sumner is now second in the NZ section lead going to the final test, the 3km Mystery Creek super special near Hamilton.

Subaru driver Sam Murray is also ahead of Mason, by 18.6s with the super special to run.

Emma Gilmour (WRX) is the fourth-placed New Zealander, around 22 seconds behind Mason.
