New Zealand V8 Ute champion, Matt Lockwood, has started his title defence perfectly, by winning the opening round of the Enzed-backed 2008/2009 series
Off-season work on the Holden Ute meant Lockwood didn’t do any testing before the opening round at Manfeild. But he gridded the VU fourth, and finished second in race one behind Simon Beirne whose father, Graham, came home third.
Lockwood dominated the Sunday Ute races with two wins and a third in the reversed marble draw race. He amassed enough points to win the round and holds a 16-point margin over Caine Lobb with Graham Beirne third
Lockwood capped his Manfeild weekend by winning round two of the Pro7 Plus (Mazda RX-7) series, extending his championship lead. He won all three races, including the reverse grid event.
“It was never intended that I drive two classes at the same meeting but unfortunately that’s how the racing calendar turned out,” he said.
“However now that I’ve done it with good results I’m looking forward to the next joint meeting at Pukekohe on December 6-7.”
