Lockwood has to settle for second

Last weekend, Matt Lockwood, narrowly missed out on retaining his Enzed NZ V8s Ute crown but this weekend he’s determined to wrap up the 2008/2009 Pro-7 Plus series for Mazda RX-7s

At Teretonga last Sunday, the Holden Commodore racer had to settle for a close second to Caine Lobb in the 2008/2009 series after Graeme Beirne tapped him into a spin in race three.

He’d gone into the race trailing Lobb by one point and was charging through the field in the reverse grid event when Beirne tagged the Holden’s rear coming out of the hairpin on to the main straight.

The spin dropped Lockwood to last, but in a stunning fightback, he passed Utes in seemingly impossible places to finish seventh which became sixth when officials penalised Beirne for the contact. However, Lockwood was now out of points contention.

“It was a tough day,” he said. “I knew the greater power of Caine’s VE Holden would be better suited to (Teretonga) and he’s driving very well (Lobb won all four races).

“But I never expected that I’d be taken out in the second to last race of the season – that’s Ute racing I guess.”

He’s hoping for a better run in the Pro-7 Plus finale at Manfeild. He’s the current points leader.
