Young guns fight tooth and nail in opening race of Taupo A1GP race meeting.
Former Formula Ford racer, Caine Lobb, scored a narrow win after an exciting opening V8 Ute race at the A1GP race meeting at a sunny Taupo this morning.
Lobb had led most of the distance until reigning champion Matt Lockwood began pouring on the pressure in the closing laps.
Lockwood increased the pressure on his fellow Holden Commodore driver on the final lap, producing a perfectly-judged passing move on the run through the infield and moving into the lead.
He began to open a small gap, but it all came undone under braking for the corner at the end of the main straight.
He went to the inside, defensive line, but the track was dirty, the Commodore locked up and he spun. That let Lobb back into the lead and he took the win.
Simon Beirne finished third after an impressive drive through the field, picking up places in the looping corner on to the main straight with finely judged moves using both the inside and outside lines.
Beirne, running a distant third, had seen Lockwood spin but ran a little wide into the corner, and had to be content with third place.
Earlier, Holden Torana driver John Colebourne won the first Muscle Car race, fending off strong race-long pressure from Holden Commodore racer, Paul Sinclair.
Shane Wigston finished third in his Holden Kingswood after a spectacular drive, the 1970s sedan wagging its tail as he strove to get in touch with the leading duo.
