Jono Lester has been named a ‘Porsche Motorsport Talent’ alongside five other young drivers after a two-day shootout at the Vallelunga Circuit near Rome, Italy last week
Lester was one of five selected from 12 candidates at a talent search in Italy. Each driver spent two days testing three 450hp Porsche 911 GT3 Cup race cars, assisted by Porsche engineers. They were also judged on criteria like personality and communication skills.
The winners will share 180,000 Euro to be put towards their racing budget.
At the age of 17, Lester won a round of the Porsche GT3 Cup NZ, finishing fourth overall last season.
Lester says, “I’m really pleased that Porsche chose me as one of the five talents. I would like to use my budget to contest the Supercup. The new Cup vehicle suits my driving style very well. The most difficult aspect will be to familiarise myself with the circuits. I hardly know any tracks outside New Zealand. My greatest dream is to one day become a Porsche works driver.
"This is a huge opportunity for me and will aid the future of my Porsche racing career to no end, and I’m thankful to Jens Walther, the Giltrap family and Ross Johnson for making the trip to Italy possible for me."
