Invercargill teenager, Damon Leitch, was in stunning touch at Teretonga Park last weekend, winning his first-ever round of the 2008/2009 MTA New Zealand Formula Ford Championship
Racing on his home track, Leitch came up just short of winning his first Formula Ford national level race on Saturday evening when he crossed the line 0.007 seconds behind championship leader Richie Stanaway.
He got the crucial first win after a torrid battle in Sunday morning’s race two and looked on target for another win in the third and final race on Sunday afternoon.
But the car was set up for a wet track and as it dried the handling deteriorated. Leitch finished second in the race, racking up enough points to take his first round victory.
"It was an excellent weekend," he said. "It was really close but we came out on top. It was great to do it in front of a home crowd. I was definitely hoping for it."
