After the high of a podium finish at Pukekohe, Southland teenager's fortunes stumble in Christchurch.
Motor racing has its ups and downs, as MTA Formula Ford racer Damon Leitch discovered at Ruapuna, Christchurch, last weekend.
The Invercargill 15-year-old was on the podium at Pukekohe three weeks earlier, but at Ruapuna he was beset by problems.
A sticking throttle hampered set-up time during Friday’s timed practice, and on Saturday handling problems, an overheating engine and sticking brakes thwarted him and he qualified 11th.
He was on the move through the pack in race one when he was bumped off the track by another racer.
An hour before Sunday’s first race, the team discovered a cracked cylinder head on the Zero Fees Stealth and had to change it quickly. Leitch charged through the field to finish eighth. He was making good progress in the final race when the car cut out on the last lap.
