Toyota Racing Series (TRS) leader Mitch Cunningham wins at Taupo.
It’s never over till the chequered flag falls which was never shown more graphically than in this afternoon’s Toyota Racing Series (TRS) heat at the Taupo A1GP meeting.
Palmerston North racer Sam MacNeill was looking good to take the win in a race in which several of the front-runners outbraked themselves in the braking zone for the final corner and spun.
Lurking in MacNeill’s mirrors was TRS series points leader, Mitch Cunningham, rubber-banding and dropping back and closing in again.
They had run one-two from the start, clear of the occasional mayhem behind them.
As the lap count rose, Cunningham closed and on the final run out of the long, sweeping corner on to the main straight he dived under MacNeill’s car and they charged down the straight together.
Cunningham was on the inside but neither car held a real advantage, but MacNeill went in deeper under brakes and speared off the track resuming just behind Cunningham after running across the grass.
So Cunningham took the chequer, with MacNeill second and Michael Burdett third despite running off-track at the final corner earlier in the race.
NZ V8s champion, John McIntyre, in his first-ever race in a top-level open-wheeler, came home eighth and was closing the gap to seventh-placed Daniel Jilesen in the final laps.
