Invercargill driver Chris Lange leads the Ford Fiesta class in Wairarapa, even though Mark Tapper has been fastest on the special stages.
June 2, 2007, 11.30am. Though the leaderboard doesn’t show it, Mark Tapper is setting the Ford Fiesta Challenge pace in the Wairarapa Rally.
Though the Aucklander has been fastest Fiesta driver on each of the first two stages, Southlander Chris Lange is leading the class.
The reason is a 40-second penalty incurred by Tapper for arriving four minutes late for the start of Special Stage 1, Horoeka Road.
Tapper won the class on Stage 1, finishing 12th overall and beating Lange by 11.8 seconds.
On SS2 he was 6.1 seconds faster than Lange, and was in scintillating touch, placing 11th overall.
Lange leads the class from Barrie and Tapper.
In the Kiwi 2 front-wheel drive class, Aaron Cook leads in his Honda Jazz Type R, and is a strong 10th overall.
Stop Press: Taylor crashes
Hawke’s Bay driver Stewart Taylor (Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9) has retired from Leg 1 of the Wairarapa Rally after hitting a bank during Special Stage 3.
Neither he nor co-driver Warwick Searle was hurt.
They were running third overall at the time.
