Sarah Twaddle, from Christchurch, is preparing herself from the gruelling Australasian Safari in western Australia
Motel assistant manager Sarah Twaddle, 27, is at the gym preparing herself for the gruelling Australasian Safari staged in Western Australia from 17 to 25 September.
Sarah, from Christchurch and currently residing in Orange, New South Wales, will be in the driver’s seat for the third time but this will be the first year she will be accompanied by her dad Brent, who will be her navigator in this extreme off-road motorsport event.
“It has been a dream since Dad first moved to Australia from New Zealand for us to do the Safari together,” Sarah said.
The Australasian Safari is likened to the Dakar for its huge challenges and vast distances covered. Sarah will be driving a new car for the 2010 event.
She will be driving a SWB Mitsubishi Pajero 3.5l quad cam V6 in a showroom class, meaning the car is standard – no extra shock absorbers or comforts to make the 3600km journey easier.
Sarah said they chose to compete in the showroom class to prove that if you drive to match the conditions, anything is possible. “And also so one day I can tell my kids that I did that toughest cross country event in Australia three times - and once with my father!
“I need to work on fitness as my body is going to get hit hard,” Sarah said.
Sarah is confident that her father daughter ‘Roo Racing’ team will do well in 2010, but said it won’t be easy.
“The biggest challenges are getting over the mental and physical drain and being able to adapt to the changing race conditions.
“But I know what is needed to get to the finish line, and I’m ready to do it again and give my father a first time finish.”
Sarah will be competing against auto, moto and quad bike drivers and riders from Australia, Brazil, Sweden, Japan, China and the UK, including V8 supercar champ Craig Lowndes.
The event begins in Perth before heading north east into outback Western Australia, through the historic goldfields, and finishing in the picturesque southern coastal town of Esperance.
