Continuing his winning ways, Wellington's Joe McAndrew has wrapped up the five-day Dunlop Targa Rally with a 35second victory after 43 special stages around the North Island.
Starting in Auckland on Monday morning, McAndrew and co-driver Sue O'Neill arrived in Hastings this afternoon to a hero's welcome after a week long battle against Australian Ray Vandersee.
Taking the win McAndrew was able to put a Kiwi name atop the standings that has been dominated by Australians for the last four years.
We're quite happy - over the moon actually," said car developer Kevin O'Neill. "Just another hard day after a long hard week."
Co-driver Sue O'Neill deputised for Joe in speaking for the teams victory. "We're pretty rapt actually -absolutely. In the end you sort of hope it goes alright and have no hassles or dramas. But the pressure was on with Aussie vs Kiwi battle, so a huge amount of pressure. It was good, so effectively they had to chase us - we just had to keep on doing what we were doing. Joe kept the pressure on and didn't back off."
"We've done this event a few times and tried for a result so it's pretty awesome to finally crack it."
