Kinser makes slow start to season

Kinser runs an uncharacteristic 13th on points after first World of Outlaws round.

February 14, 2007. Steve Kinser’s return to World of Outlaws Sprint Car competition hasn’t been accompanied by a return to his usual position atop the point standings. The Bloomington. Indiana , King of the Outlaws and many other leading drivers raced in the rival National Sprint Tour last year but that series has folded and the top level of the sport is no longer divided.

Following last weekend’s season-opening DIRTcar Nationals at Florida’s Volusia Speedway Park, the top-10 of Outlaws standings offers the rare sight of Kinser languishing in 13th place.

At Volusia Kinser posted 11th and 13th place preliminary night results and failed to finish the Sunday night A-main.

Defending World of Outlaws champion Donny Schatz leads the series with 442 points from 2006 National Sprint Tour champion Danny Lasoski on 430. Joey Saldana (415), Sunday night winner Daryn Pittman (410), Craig Dollansky (408) and Aussie hard charger Kerry Madsen (406) are next.

With more than 80 nights of racing on the 2007 WoO schedule there is plenty of time for Kinser to secure his 21st victory in the championship.

The next stop in the series is Thunderbowl Speedway at Tulare, California on February 24-25.
