New Zealand racing great, Jim Richards, and his historic Ford Falcon race car (pictured) will star at the Shannons Sports and Muscle Car Showdown at Queensland Raceway on June 27-28
Richards’ 1964 Falcon Sprint will be one of up to 20 V8-engined Trans Am Tribute cars from the 1960s and 1970s that will contest six races over the two days.
Also in the field are two 500-horsepower Ford Shelby Mustang GT 350s and a 550-horsepower 1969 Chevrolet Camaro. They’ll make rolling starts behind a 1970 Boss Mustang 302 pace car.
The original Trans Am saloons raced in America from 1966 to 1972 and were powered by 5.0-litre V8s. Among the racers were Mustangs, Camaros, Pontiac Firebirds, Dodge Challengers and AMC Javelins.
The Trans Am Tribute meeting will include larger-engined muscle cars. Confirmed historic cars taking part are the 1965 Mustang that the late Ian (Pete) Geoghegan drove to 68 wins from 74 starts, the ex-Dick Johnson #17 Bryan Burt Falcon Hardtop, the ex-John French Falcon XC Hardtop and the ex-Bob Morris XD Falcon sedan.
The Geoghegan Mustang and both Hardtops will run in track demonstration sessions on Saturday and Sunday. Ex-V8 Supercar driver Craig Harris will race the XD in Muscle Car Sprints which pit four groups of Australian and American cars against each other.
Jim Richards is the meeting’s patron and will be the keynote speaker at a muscle car dinner.
