July 7, 2007, 5.30pm. Glen Inkster has won the 2007 Taranaki Tarmac Rally, leading home 2006 winner Neill Marshall by 46 seconds.
Inkster, driving an Andrew Hawkeswood-built Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 6.5, grabbed the lead on Special Stage 1 this morning and never lost it.
His other main rivals struck trouble, Nissan Skyline GT driver Joe McAndrew dropping out on SS3 – but rejoining the rally this afternoon – and Richard Mason’s Impreza WRX STi stopping on SS5.
Marshall took second place when Mason’s attack faltered in SS4, and he consolidated it this afternoon, eventually bringing his Lancer Evo 3 to the end of SS7 60 one minute ahead of Tom Good in the NZ-built Saker Sprint sports car.
Daynom Templeman finished fourth overall in a Lancer Evo 6, followed by Charlie Evans (Mazda RX7), Glenn Rosser (WRX), and Stuart Rose (Toyota Hilux Ute).
Glenn Smith, the rally’s top seed, fought back from a difficult morning to post a string of fast stage times and finish eighth overall in a Sam Murray-run WRX.
Jason Gill (Evo 6) and Cameron Cox (Evo 3) completed the top 10.
Marshall won the North Island Series section of the event, with Smith second.
Honda Integra Type R driver Grant Liston continued his unbroken run of class victories and still leads the North Island Series on points.
