Super-fast rally driver Andrew Hawkeswood has confirmed he'll be back to tackle the Race to the Sky hillclimb near Wanaka this Easter.
February 15, 2007. Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9 driver Andrew Hawkeswood has confirmed he’ll defend his title as fastest New Zealander in the Silverstone Race To The Sky hillclimb at Cardrona, near Wanaka.
In this year’s 10th anniversary hillclimb at Easter, Hawkeswood will run the same Evo 9 that took him to second overall and top New Zealander in 2006.
He had planned to build a car capable of challenging seven-time winner Monster Tajima’s Suzuki special. However the new car isn’t ready.
"We'll run the old girl, the same as last year,” Hawkeswood said this week. “We've dragged it into the shop and added a nitrous oxide kit to help spool the turbo up at low rpm for better power out of Cardrona's notorious hairpin corners.
“We'll be down on the Monday beforehand for some testing.”
Hawkeswood says the hillclimb is “a great event, I really like it. It’s just so laid back, it's awesome. I only wish you could have six or eight runs up the hill over the weekend."
He says business commitments have delayed completion of the new car.
“It will happen but it’ll take more time and money. The design work has been done. It will be a twin-turbo V8-powered car. It’s not a manufacturer car."
