Double Toyota Racing Series champion Daniel Gaunt has signed with high-stepping Porsche GT3 team, XXX Motorsport for the summer series
Gaunt’s signing gives the outfit an exceptionally strong line-up for the 2008/2009 championship which starts at Pukekohe, south of Auckland, this weekend.
Gaunt joins multiple Porsche champion Craig Baird and 2007 Australian Carrera Cup champion, David Reynolds, in the XXX front line.
Gaunt finished second behind Baird in his rookie Porsche season in 2007/2008, and will race the 997 model GT3 campaigned previously by Mad Butcher Holdings boss, Mike Morton.
Morton, who describes himself as the team’s social activities manager, says he’s happy to hand over the car to Gaunt.
“He wants top learn from Baird and Reynolds who you’d have to say are two of the best drivers in Australasia.”
Gaunt says that when Morton offered his car, he took the offer “with both hands. I’ve worked with Mike before and he’s obviously been a great supporter and (XXX) is a good team to join.
“Plus I’ll be joining Bairdo. The last little bit is hard to get out of any car and Bairdo is doing it day in day out so It’ll be a learning curve for me.
“The cars are obviously very competitive so it’s going to be interesting at the first session of Pukekohe.”
The Porsches are on-track on Friday for timed practice and will race on Saturday and Sunday.
