Freshened car for Auckland fastman.
Auckland Porsche racer, Daniel Gaunt, is out to regain his third placing in the 2008/2009 Battery Town series when it resumes at Timaru this weekend.
The former double Toyota Racing Series champion set a new GT3 qualifying lap record at the South Canterbury circuit last year, and took his first pole starting position in the series.
“I enjoy Timaru,” he says. “It was the first ever place I raced a car…so that’s another reason I enjoy driving around it.
“It has some dangerous areas and is tough to string a whole perfect lap together and if I can match last year’s qualifying result I’ll be pretty happy.”
Like teammate, points leader and defending champion Craig Baird, Gaunt will have a fully-freshened Type 997 GT3 for the southern races.
Baird says the coming two consecutive race weekends (Invercargill’s Teretonga is a week after Timaru) are a favourite part of his New Zealand race campaign.
“Timaru is my favourite track in the country and having Invercargill the week after means I can spend the whole time with my family,” says the Queensland-based Kiwi.
“You have nearly a week in Queenstown between rounds and it’s only a few hours’ drive down the road and you’re racing again, where normally you’ve got a long journey between events.”
