Daniel Gaunt wins TRS class' 100th race as he sharpens up for the 2009 NZ Grand Prix at Manfeild.
Double Toyota Racing Series champion Daniel Gaunt fended off race one winner Earl Bamber and series leader Mitch Cunningham to win the TRS sprint race at Manfeild today.
It was the category’s 100th race, and a good curtain-raiser for the 2009 New Zealand Grand Prix.
Gaunt made a perfect start from pole with Bamber slotting into second, and Cunningham, Sam MacNeill and Alastair Wootten in pursuit.
Several off-track excursions in the first two laps triggered a Safety Car period and at the restart, Gaunt sprinted away from Bamber, Michael Burdett, Wootten and MacNeill.
Bamber shrugged off Cunningham and set off after Gaunt but simply ran out of laps to mount a challenge.
Burdett finished fourth behind Cunningham, with Wootten fifth and Ken Smith sixth. MacNeill’s challenge faded on the last lap when his gearshift cable snapped. Stuck in a low gear he cruised to finish eighth.
