Double Toyota Racing Series champion, Daniel Gaunt, will return to the open-wheel category to contest this weekend’s 2009 NZ Grand Prix at Manfeild
Gaunt, who has been racing this season for the Triple-X Porsche GT3 team, won the 2007 Grand Prix, held at Teretonga near Invercargill.
“The Grand Prix is New Zealand’s most prestigious trophy,” he says. “Basically it’s the one everyone wants to win. It has the most history and it’s one of the hardest races I’ve ever done before.”
Gaunt’s GT3 sponsors, VnC Cocktails and the Mad Butcher, will back his drive this weekend.
“It was a group decision,” says Gaunt. “I’m really keen to give it a crack for Triple X Motorsport.”
He says most of the drivers in the Grand Prix have done 15-16 days in the Toyota over the last few months.
“They’re going to be sharp (but) I’d like to think after practice on the Thursday and Friday we’ll be just as sharp.
In a one-make series you’re never going to walk away with it but I’d like to think we’ll be on the money and have as good a shot as anyone at the Grand Prix.”
