Dario Franchitti won the season-ending Indy 300 at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Saturday, claiming the IRL title ahead of Target Chip Ganassi teamate Scott Dixon
The 2007 champion returned after a year off to take the title, ahead fo the favoured Kiwi.
"I can't believe it," Franchitti said. "It all worked out."
Franchitti saved fuel over the final 50 laps, leaving the title open when his two contenders had to pit for fuel.
"We were sticking to our strategy," Franchitti said. "Our car was really good at the end."
Franchitti finished with 616 points, unofficially 11 ahead of Dixon and 12 ahead of Penske Racing's Ryan Briscoe.
Tony Kanaan was fourth and fellow Brazilian Helio Castroneves fifth.
