Dixon starts sixth on grid

Former IRL champion Scott Dixon has gridded sixth for the 2007 series opener in Florida.

March 24, 2007, 6.30pm. Scott Dixon has qualified sixth for the Indy racing League (RL) championship opener at Homestead Miami oval in Florida, USA. Dixon’s Target Chip Ganassi teammate Dan Wheldon (pictured right) is on pole.

Dixon, who won at Miami in 2003, ran a lap of 212.733mph in his Panoz-Honda. Wheldon ran 214.322mph.

“The first timed lap the car was bit loose (oversteering) and sliding all over the place,” Dixon said. “The speed wasn’t too good so I just took the next lap a lot more smoothly but I had a bit of understeer and couldn’t drive near the bottom of the track, so our qualifying time wasn’t great.

“The key is not how you start the race. It’s how you finish. We’re hoping to have a good race to start the season off on the right foot.”

The top six qualifiers were: Dan Wheldon, 214.322mph; Sam Hornish Junior, 214.298mph; Dario Franchitti, 213.714mph; Tony Kanaan, 213.474mph; Marco Andretti 212.754 mph; Scott Dixon. 212.733mph.
