Dixon helping with ticket sales for IRL Sonoma

Instead of taking laps around the twisting road course, Target Chip Ganassi Racing’s IndyCar drivers Scott Dixon and Dan Wheldon will be taking ticket orders next Thursday, Aug. 17, at Infineon Raceway.

Race fans will get the rare opportunity to chat with Dixon and Wheldon, and at the same time, purchase tickets for the upcoming Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma weekend, Aug. 25-27, in the Sonoma Valley.

Fans can call directly into the raceway at 800-870-RACE or come to the track in-person to the Guest Services building, which is located at the main entrance into the facility. Both Dixon and Wheldon will be manning the phones from 11:30 a.m.- noon (Pacific).

“Fans will have no doubt it’s really us on the phone with our lovely accents,” laughed Dixon who sports a New Zealand accent while Wheldon’s is decidedly British. “You really can’t fake those. I think it’s a fun idea and a great way to get fans excited about coming to see us race at Infineon. We appreciate the support fans give us and the IndyCar series so this is a good way to let them know that directly.”

Dixon and Wheldon have certainly proven themselves in the IndyCar® Series, with each driver winning a series championship — Wheldon in 2005 and Dixon in 2003. They have also combined for 16 career Indycar victories, including Wheldon’s win at the 2005 Indianapolis 500.

Dixon is especially strong on the permanent road courses with victories each of the last two years at Watkins Glen (N.Y.). He placed seventh in the inaugural IndyCar event in Sonoma in 2005.

“The Target team was on pole last year and had a good run here last year but we left things unfinished,” said Dixon “The Target team has always been good on road or street courses and we hope that’s the case again this year. This season to date, I finished second and won the last two races on road/street courses and I fully intend to continue that streak next week at Infineon Indy Grand Prix.”

Wheldon and Dixon are third and fourth in the Championship standings, respectively, entering this weekend’s IndyCar event at Kentucky Speedway.

They will switch gears, literally, on Aug. 17 at Infineon Raceway. Taking ticket orders over the telephone, or in person, is not a job either driver has had, but they’re looking forward to the interaction with race fans.
“It’s great to have that kind of one-on-one interaction with the people that make this sport possible for us because without fans we wouldn’t be able to do what we love,” said Wheldon. “Infineon is such a good venue for fans to see everything happening on track too. With the IndyCar championship as close as it is, and such a good lineup of other races throughout the weekend, I’m going to guess Scott and I are going to be really busy answering phones. It’s a big race for the Target team and I’m hoping a lot of the people calling in for tickets and coming to the race will be there to support us. It’s going to be a big weekend for us.”

The Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma weekend at Infineon Raceway will also feature the debut of the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series, Indy Pro Series™ and Historic Formula One Grand Prix. Call 800-870-RACE or visit www.infineonraceway for more information.
