Dixon fights to retake lead in IRL Infineon race

A comfortable leader from the start, Scott Dixon in the Target Racing #9 Honda was unlucky not to win the Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma, the 13th of 14 events in the 2006 IRL IndyCar® Series season.

A comfortable leader from the start, Scott Dixon in the Target Racing #9 Honda was unlucky not to win the Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma, the 13th of 14 events in the 2006 IRL IndyCar® Series season.

Stretching to a sizeable 3s lead before the first round of pit stops, Dixon resumed leading the field when team-mate Dan Wheldon eventually took his stop - the Kiwi significantly faster than all the other cars at the Infineon roadcourse Raceway.

However, during the course of the second pit Dixon's team had a faulty air jack fail to raise the car fully during the changing of the left front wheel. The time spent getting the car raised and Dixon back on the track relegated him to 11th position with over half the race run.

Impatiently fighting to reduce the over 10s difference to first place, Dixon fought his way back to fourth position at the end of the 80-lap race.

Still in fourth for the IRL drivers standings, he is 21 points behind the leader with one round left in the 2006 season.

The final race is to be run at the Chicagoland Speedway on 10th September.
