Damp start for Targa competitors


The 2006 Dunlop Targa left Auckland today, in challenging and wet weather conditions.

. During the closing stagesof Day One, It is power verus technology as Wellington Driver Joe McAndrew leads the field 9 seconds ahead of Dunedin based professional rally driver Emma Gilmour in her Possum Bourne Motorsport prepared Subaru WRX Sti.

Closely following in her wheel tracks is the chasing pack made up of the Trans-tasman team, the Blackie brothers in their Porsche 911 Turbo, Clark Proctor's New Zealand built Nissan turbo powered Ford Escort and the Australian built Skelta sports car driven by Ray Vandersee.

Charging through the field is the Toyota Supra of Peter Van Breugel followed by John Penny Mitsubishi Evo and Mike Tubbs BMW 325.

The star entry of ex-pat New Zealander Steve Millen in the new Ford GT is taking an experienced and steady approach whilst getting used to the conditions and the totally new car. Many are predicting a strong finish for the exotic turbocharged V8 coupe. The event is after all one of endurance and the next six days will see many changes of position.

Day One of the Dunlop Targa finishes tonight in New Plymouth with the competitors finishing their biggest competition day through the very testing roads of the Waikato, King Country and North Taranaki.

The event finishes next Saturday in Hastings.
