Kiwi international Mitch Cunningham, who races regularly in the USA, is in buoyant mood as he seeks to increase series lead.
Toyota Racing Series (TRS) points leader Mitch Cunningham is taking a strategic approach to his 2008/2009 campaign as he prepares for round two, at Timaru, on January 10-11.
"In the past, people have accused me of only looking as far as the next qualifying session or race,” he says. “So it's good, and certainly quite a confidence-booster, to be in the other position this time."
Cunningham says his only concern is avoiding a repeat of the tyre pressure problems that marred his performance in qualifying at the series-opener at Ruapuna (Christchurch).
“I certainly hope we can get on top of it when we test at Timaru. We were quick in practice at Christchurch but kind of dropped the ball in qualifying then had to play catch-up in the races."
Cunningham scored fourth and second place finishes at Christchurch where several key rivals struck problems which robbed them of consistent points-scoring placings.
2008/09 Toyota Racing Series points standings: Mitch Cunningham 188; Nathan Antunes 184; Sam MacNeill 162; Daniel Jilesen 148; Scott Pye 142; Keeley Pudney 133.
