Cowan’s epic journey re-created

One of the greatest-ever rally adventures will be re-created with the 40th anniversary London to Sydney Rally next year

February 28, 2007, 9.30pm. One of the epic events from rally history will be re-created next year.

An official launch for the 40th anniversary London to Sydney Marathon will take place at Race Retro, the International Historic Motorsport Show in Britain on March 23.

The 2008 London to Sydney Marathon will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the original event which was won by Scotland’s Andrew Cowan in a Hillman Hunter.

The route will feature a full overland drive to India in keeping with the concept of the original 1968 Marathon, including a full crossing of Iran and Pakistan to India, something which has not been driven since the second London to Sydney of 1977.

Route consultant John Sprinzel, who drove his home-prepared MG Midget on the 1968 Marathon, says the marathon “could be the most authentic historic rally so far: original route, original cars to the correct specifications, and roads that haven’t changed much in 40 years.’’
