Buist consolidates classic lead

Christchurch Ford Escort driver heads the international classic Rally of Otago.

Dunedin, April 14, 2007, 1pm. Ford Escort BDA driver Deane Buist holds a handy lead in the Dunlop International Classic Rally of Otago after the first three stages.

The classic event runs as part of the overall Otago Rally, the cars starting behind the NZ championship field.

Buist’s elapsed time over the three tests is 21 minutes 35.1 seconds.

He’s 20.1 seconds ahead of Robert Murray’s Mazda RX7 with Italian former world championship driver Alex Fiorio a further 4.8 seconds behind in a Porsche 911.

Fiorio went on the charge in SS3, slicing 5.7 seconds off Murray’s margin in the 8.12km sprint.

Murray also leads the classic section of the NZ championship, from Deborah Kibble (Mitsubishi Lancer) and Rob Wylie's Nissan 240RS.
