Budapest, Hungary, August 6.
Polish driver Robert Kubica’s Formula 1 debut ended with an impressive seventh place finish – and then disqualification after a post-race inspection found his BMW-Sauber to be underweight.
Kubica, the BMW test driver, replaced Jacques Villeneuve, who was hurt in the previous weekend’s German Grand Prix at Hockenheim.
Kubica is the first Polish driver to race in Formula 1.
After Sunday’s race officials weighed his BMW and found to be about 2kg too light.
The ruling promoted Ferrari's Michael Schumacher into the final point-scoring position of eighth.
Schumacher didn’t finish in Hungary after a track rod broke on his Ferrari.
Schumacher's retirement came just a few laps from the end so he was classified ninth.
BMW said the weight discrepancy on Kubica’s car was caused by tyre wear.
