Simon Beirne is looking to go one better and win the Enzed V8 ute series which begins at Manfeild.
Simon Beirne is itching to get back into V8 Ute racing action when the 2008/2009 Enzed-backed series begins at Manfeild in the Manawatu this weekend.
Christchurch driver Beirne was the best of the Ford Falcon racers in last year’s inaugural series and came within an ace of winning the overall crown.
Fast food giant, McDonalds, will again sponsor Beirne who will run as Junior Burner in the series which favours drivers using colourful nicknames.
Simon will race in a four-truck team with his father Graham (Senior Burner) and Frank Van Schaijik (The Flying Dutchman) who did last season’s final two rounds. All three are in Falcons.
Former NZ V8s driver and team owner, Mike Pero (The Loan Ranger), will drive the team’s fourth Ute, a Holden Commodore.
The team is taking a professional approach to the series. "It's like a business,” says Simon. “We're there to do a job and do a job very well and to deliver to our partners McDonalds’ expectations.
“Also, there’s a championship at stake and dad and I have our personal goals. I'm pragmatic though and we’ll need all our ducks in a line. Even then, motorsport being motorsport, we’re in the arms of lady luck."
