Series debutant throws down gauntlet to Toyota Racing Series regulars.
Australian Scott Pye has been fastest in free practice for this weekend’s opening round of the Toyota Racing Series at Ruapuna, Christchurch.
Pye, driving for Trevor Sheumack’s European Technique team owned by Trevor Sheumack, this morning lapped at 1m 21.076s in his first proper run in a wings-and-slicks open-wheeler, and then went faster in the afternoon session.
Whangaparaoa driver Alastair Wootten was next quickest this morning on 1m 21.146s, followed by Aucklander Mitch Cunningham (1m 21.251s).
Palmerston North driver Sam MacNeill’s car developed a misfire halfway through the session, and 2007/2008 Rookie of the Year Michael Burdett’s car jammed in sixth gear at the end of the pit straight while travelling at more than 200km/h. “That was a bit exciting, going into the big left hander without being able to change down,” he said.
Pye got into the 1m 20s bracket in the afternoon, setting the day’s quickest time of 1m 20.542s, followed by Cunningham (1m 20.671s), MacNeill (1m 20.930s) and Burdett (1m 20.992)s.
