Australian Chris Atkinson, out of work after Subaru withdrew from world rallying, will drive in selected 2009 World Rally Championship (WRC) events for the Citroen junior team
His first event is this month’s Rally Ireland (January 30-February 1), in a full-spec Citroen C4 WRC, though it’s unclear how many other rallies he’ll do.
The junior team will also field Sebastien Ogier, Conrad Rautenbach and Evgeny Novikov during the season.
Atkinson’s former Subaru teammate, 2003 world champion Petter Solberg, is yet to find a 2009 drive, though he’s been linked with a proposal to run a privateer Ford Focus RS. Even if that eventuates, he won’t be on the startline in Ireland.
Solberg says he’s still working “flat out” on finding a drive, and the organisers of his home event, Rally Norway, have given him an extended closing date for an entry – January 13.
“I am very happy for the new date,” he says. “But there is still a lot of work to do before we are there.”
