Alonso signs with Renault for two more seasons

F1 fastman Fernando Alonso to stay with Renault for 2009 and 2010.

Former world champion Fernando Alonso will drive for Renault in Formula 1 for two more years.

Renault won manufacturers’ and drivers' titles with Alonso in 2005 and 2006.

Alonso won more points than any other driver in the last six 2008 Grands Prix, including wins at the inaugural Singapore night race and in Japan. He finished fifth overall in the world championship.

Renault has retained Nelson Piquet Junior as second driver for another year.

“We are pleased to continue our Formula 1 experience with Fernando Alonso and Nelson Piquet, two remarkable drivers," says ING Renault F1 Team boss, Bernard Rey.

“The technical team showed its prowess in returning to the top under the direction of Flavio Briatore.”

Rey says that with a television audience of nearly 2.5 billion every season, Formula 1 brings Renault strong media exposure, especially in growing markets.

With the growing links between Formula 1 and production vehicles, the technological advances made in racing directly benefit mass-market models, he says.
