Scotsman Alister McRae will head the field in the 2009 Otago Classic Rally in mid-May
The former works Mitsubishi and Hyundai driver and brother of the 1995 World Rally Champion, the late Colin McRae, will pilot a Ford Escort Mark 2 BDA run by Bryce Biggs and prepared by Paul Goatley.
Biggs has previously run McRae’s father, five times British champion Jimmy McRae, in BDA Escorts in New Zealand historic rallying.
Alister is also a former British champion and was last seen here two years ago, driving a Subaru Impreza WRX STi in a programme that was curtailed by lack of money.
In Otago he’ll face strong opposition from former winner, Christchurch’s Deane Buist, and Australian international Ross Dunkerton, both also in BDA Escorts.
Otago clerk of the course, Norm Oakley, says organisers are excited to have McRae in the field.
“It’s always our aim to attract someone who will make it a real challenge for a local driver to win against.
“Alister is a class act and will be very competitive. He’ll certainly give Buist and Dunkerton a run for their money.”
The Otago Classic Rally runs as part of the 2009 New Zealand Championship Otago Rally, from May 16-17, and is based in Dunedin.
