Winterbottom takes V8 Supercar pole
April 21, 2007, 1.45pm. Mark Winterbottom has put his FPR Ford falcon on pole for the opening race of the Australian V8 Supercar round at Pukekohe this afternoon.
Winterbottom lapped at 55.67 seconds to take the prime starting position.
Till the last seconds of the top 10 qualifying session, it had looked like being a FPR front row, with Steve Richards running second on 55.79s.
But Toll HSV’s Garth Tander put in a last-ditch fast lap in his VE Commodore to clock 55.74s and take second spot.
His teammate, series leader Rick Kelly, will start alongside him, after lapping at 55.80s.
Next up is Jamie Whincup (Ford) on 55.83, followed by Holden Racing Team leader Mark Skaife (55.89s).
James Courtney has gridded his Stone Brothers Falcon seventh (55.90s), ahead of Ford racers Craig Lowndes (55.92s) and Russell Ingall (56.01s), and HRT’s Todd Kelly (56.03s).
Formula Ford mayhem
April 21, 2007, 1.45pm. Formula Ford drivers John Whelan and Jason Liefting have escaped injury after a high-speed tangle during today’s second heat for the 1600cc open wheelers.
They touched as they turned into the right-hand sweeper at the end of the pit straight, and spun into the Armco barrier on the outside of the track.
Several cars missed them but Sam MacNeill’s Van Diemen ended up in the wall after he mounted the kerb on the inside of the corner as he tried to avoid the spinning cars. His car slid across the road and stopped against the Armco.
