Nissan has applied for a US government federal loan to speed development of electric vehicles (EV) and advanced batteries.
The size of the loan, which is being considered by Congress, hasn’t been disclosed.
US reports suggest Nissan would use part of the loan to build a battery factory in its Smyrna, Tennessee, plant.
Nissan plans to start selling an EV vehicle in America next year.
It has been operating the Tennessee factory for 26 years which makes it elligible to apply for US Energy Department loans for new energy-efficient projects.
The wacky car pictured is the Nissan Pivo electric car concept which had a swivelling cabin so the car could drive off in the opposite direction without making a U-turn. What would US lawmakers think of that?
