Luxury makers turn to hybrids


March 9, 2007, 10am, BMW and DaimlerChrysler are joining forces to develop a hybrid powertrain for large rear-drive vehicles like the Mercedes S-Class (photo).

The first products with the drivetrain will be on sale within three years.

The joint venture is an extension of a 2005 agreement that resulted in the Hybrid Development Centre in Troy, Michigan
