GM is signaling a comeback in the alternatives arena with the unveiling at Detroit Motor Show of Chevrolet’s Volt concept, a battery-powered, four-passenger car that uses a petrol engine to create extra electricity to extend its range.
Volt follows GM’s EV1 of 1996, which had limited range, limited room and limited performance. The newcomer is said to address all these problems and can be fully charged at a mains outlet in six hours, for a range of about 60km. Then, a one litre, three-cylinder turbocharged engine cuts in to create electricity and replenish the battery.
A production version is some years away.
