Compass takes a softer route

Jeep heads takes a new direction next month with the arrival of Compass, its first “soft” off-roader.

Jeeps so far sold here have been capable of tough off-roading but now, a decade after rival Land Rover introduced Freelander, the American company has decided to brawn-down.
Compass is built on a floorpan developed by Mitsubishi and Jeep, with the Japanese company taking the lead role. It will be sold with two engine options, a new 128kW 2.4 litre petrol engine and a 2.0 litre common rail diesel that produces 103kW at 4000rpm and 310Nm of torque at 2500rpm.
